Aegis Authenticator Secure and Private Alternative to Google Authenticator

Free and Open Source 2-Factor Authentication

Aegis Authenticator the Free alternative to Google.

Today, two-factor authentication is considered the minimum level of security to control access to online platforms.

Among the most famous, if not the most famous, we find the usual Google app, Google Authenticator , which allows you to use two-factor authentication on various sites.

But how can we trust a company that reads our emails to do targeted advertising at best and sells our data to third-party companies?

The answer is unfortunately not simple, that's why we should learn to consider alternatives that do exactly the same job but in a completely private way. One of these alternatives is Aegis Authenticator.

We can download Aegis Authenticator directly from the official website https://getaegis.app/

Aegis supports importing from other two-factor authentication apps so switching between apps should be very easy, the official website states the following:

"Compared to other 2FA apps, we think Aegis stands out in terms of simplicity and security. Popular apps like Google Authenticator and FreeOTP don't bother with additional security measures. They allow access to your tokens immediately upon opening the app. Aegis, on the other hand, encrypts all your tokens at rest and requires a password or the touch of a finger to decrypt them.

Another important feature is the ability to export tokens and import them to another device. Google Authenticator does not have this, which has not only annoyed users for years, but has also led to the loss of access to many accounts."

Of course, it is possible to set both an unlock pin and an unlock through biometrics (although I think it is much better to stick to the code). Aegis automatically creates automatic backup copies on our phone that can always be synchronized with for example our now known Syncthing so that if we lose the phone for some reason we can still access our accounts through the copy stored on another device.

Aegis supports a set of icons that we can install on our app so that we can immediately locate the code of the site we want to access.

Among the many interesting features there is the protection against screenshots to increase the security level of our tokens.

In conclusion, Aegis is a truly excellent and safe alternative to Google Authenticator that we can install for free and without fear because, as reported by the Alternative To website (which I recommend you consult when you are looking for open source apps and free alternatives), it has three essential features not present in Google Authenticator, namely: Privacy Focused, Ad-free and No Tracking.

Below is an image from Alternative To.

Below we can instead notice how Google Authenticator does not have the same security features present on Aegis so we can certainly conclude that Aegis is much more secure than Google Authenticator obviously unfortunately not everyone knows this fundamental thing for an application that serves to preserve security in access.
